Many people take up journaling for different reasons. Some write for fun, others for work, while many people find that it provides an avenue to express themselves. When you are writing for your mental health, it is important that you focus on the objective of getting better, but do not allow it to be a source of unnecessary pressure.
As with everything else, the beginning is bound to be challenging. You may find that you do not know what to write. Now is not the time to worry about it but to get you started. Write about anything; how you feel, what your thoughts are and even events that happened. As you mature into it, you will learn to focus your writing on relevant thoughts and reflect on them. You will even go further to analyze and realize where you went wrong and work on correcting that. The idea is to start writing.
Do not aim for perfection; aim for self-expression. Ensure that you are honest with yourself and are able to look deep within you and articulate your feelings and thoughts. Over time, refine the process as per the guidelines, and you will witness the power of writing.
I remember my first days of writing were particularly hard because I had never kept a diary, even as a teenager. However, I have learned to enjoy writing down my thoughts and feelings. I consider it as having a second non-judgmental me to go through my day with me, combing through my deepest thoughts and reflecting on the struggles and successes. When I am overcome with thoughts that I cannot share with others, I am happy to know that I have somewhere I can pour them and not have to worry about consequences. I come out feeling lighter and happier.
